Vrisohori

No one knows when the settlement was built. It is first mentioned in golden-sealed Presidential Decree of Andronikos the Second on 1295 and its old Vlach name was LJIASINTSA. However, its hellenic name LESINITSA was widely used. It was named as Vrisochori in 1927. The picturesque Vrysochori, with the Alpine landscape, pertains to Zagori and is located at an altitude of 940m. in the Vikos-Aoos Forest, at the foot of the Tsouka-Rosa peak.

The village is the most remote village of Zagori (with reference point the city of Ioannina). It is the 3rd largest in the area among the villages of Zagori, it is between the 2nd and the 5th highest peak of Greece (Smolikas 2637 meters and Tymfi 2497 meters) and of course, between the two Dragonlakes of these mountains. Its distance from the Aoos River is just 5 kilometers and at that point the altitude does not exceed 400 meters.

It is probably the only place in Greece where one can see snow during all year, since at the foothills of Tsoukarossia there are large pieces of glaciers that do not melt with the heat of the summer.

It is 74 km from Ioannina.

Due to the rich flora and fauna, the famous University of Cambridge in England, has been sending scientists since 1970 to study them.

The inhabitants of the village are Vlachophones, some of its history’s greats are Michael Doukakis and John Cassavetes, while its geographical position played a major role in the resistance of the 1940s.

The beautiful architecture of the village houses has been preserved in only a few houses because the village was burned down in the 1940s. Twice during the German’s occupation and once during the civil war.

At the beginning of the century, the village numbered about 1,800 inhabitants, while today its permanent residents have been limited to a few dozens.
